China Leads Gold Medal Count while US Leads Overall Medal Count
After 3 days of the Beijing Olympics the medal race is heating up as the United States sits on 20 total medals with 6 gold while China has 10 gold and 16 overall. After last night's miraculous relay win you wouldn't think things could get better for the US swimming teams, but today it did. The US picked up 3 golds and 6 total medals in the pool today with Michael Phelps grabbing gold in the 200 free.
China, as expected, rolled to gold in mens gymnastics with a dominating performance. Japan took the silver and the Americans grabbing a well earned bronze.
Korea sits third in the medal race at 10 total with 5 gold. Next is Italy on 8 and Australia at 7 both having 3 golds each.
The global economic crisis is causing serious unemployment issues in China and there are concerns about rising social tensions across the huge country. Currently, the employment situation is critical, and this impact (of the financial crisis) is still unfolding."
