Hong Kong is a Shoppers Delight

From Giordano to Marks & Spencer to Gucci, Hong Kong really has got it all for any level of shopping experience. Before Bangkok and Singapore became shopping destinations, there was Hong Kong with its highend shops, night markets and specialty boutiques.  If you are after retail therapy, Hong Kong has it all in terms of variety. Whether you are a big spender or on a tight budget, the former crown colony is the place to be if you want great finds at different price points.

The Central District is where one can find towering skyscrapers and highend atriums and shopping malls, including The Landmark, H&M, The Galleria, Alexandra House and Prince’s Building.  But there’s another side to Central. Two parallel streets in the district, known as “The Lanes,” are a riot of stalls selling everything from inexpensive clothing, watches and costume jewelry to luggage and shoes. Situated between Queen’s Road Central and Des Voeux Road Central, the market is open daily.

There’s also Stanley Street and Stanely Market, which is known for its reasonably priced photographic equipment, and Hollywood Road for antiques.  Admiralty, known for brand name luxury goods, is home to Pacific Place, one of Hong Kong’s most popular malls. Pacific Place is connected to the Admiralty MTR station.

Western Market in Sheung Wan is an Edwardian building filled with handicraft stores and fabric shops situated at the corner of Connaught Road and Morrison St. To the west is an area with Chinese shops selling dried seafood and medicinal herbs.

A visit to Hong Kong will not be complete without going to Jade Market in Yau Ma Tai, which has 400 stalls selling pendants, rings, bracelets, carving and ornaments all made of jade. The market is also the main gathering place for buyers of the stone, which is associated with long life and good health.

Kowloon is where one can find lots of bargains, including clothes, electrical devices and electronic products and even antiques.   There is so much to do and see in Hong Kong, especially if you are going there to shop. Q Channel 11 is giving one of its viewers a chance to win a trip to Hong Kong with the “Shop Around Asia on Q” promo. One big winner per week for eight consecutive weeks will experience the shopping spree of a lifetime with plane fare and accommodations for two and pocket money. Q11 will also air a photo diary of the winner’s trip.

To join, viewers must tune in to Q from Monday to Friday and catch the VJ promo spots where Hilary, Isa and Steph will dish out trivia or tips about the destination in focus. This week, it is Hong Kong. Next week, the featured destination is Shanghai, China.   At the end of the spot, the VJ will ask a question related to the featured country. Viewers must text in the correct answer to win the daily prize and qualify for the weekly raffle that will determine the week’s winner of the Asian shopping spree.
