Oil leak pollutes Wei River in Shaanxi province
A large oil leak has polluted a 20 mile stretch of the Wei River in Shaanxi province in China. An estimated 20,000 gallons of oil had poured from a China National Petroleum Corp. pipeline into the Wei River.
A man answering the phone at the provincial environmental protection office told The Associated Press that people had been sent to the scene but had no details. Calls to the oil company, China's largest producer of oil and gas, were not answered Saturday while Xinhua reported that the company said the leak was under control and that more than 700 people were working to control and cleanup the leak.
China will spend billions of dollars to arrest massive environmental problems along the Yangtze river and its Three Gorges reservoir.
