Trade Tension between US and China after Tire Tariff
The US provoked the Chinese government on Monday by placing stiff tariffs on the import of Chinese tires. China immediately responded by announcing investigations into chicken imports from the US. China also requested World Trade Organization consultations with the United States over the duties.
Worry is that the tire duties on Chinese tires could provoke a trade war between the two countries, but it is more likely just a negotiating tool by the US government.
"Even though the duties the US imposed were lower than those recommended by US International Trade Commission, it is still a serious case of protectionism, which China resolutely opposes," said China's vice minister of commerce, Zhong Shan.
The tire duty was the first time Washington has applied special "safeguard" provisions that Beijing agreed to before joining the WTO in 2001. That could spark a "chain reaction of trade protectionist measures that could slow the current pace of revival in the world economy," the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said.
