Typhoon Morakot slams China forces 1 million to flee
Typhoon Morakot slammed into China forcing more than 1 million to flee the powerful storm. The storm left Taiwan with its worst flooding in over 50 years and headed straight to the China eastern coast hitting with torrential rains and 75mph winds. Hundreds of villages and towns have been flooded and officials estimate 2000 houses have been destroyed by Morakot.
By Monday evening the storm had weakened with winds down to 50mph, but rain was still pelting the region. In the northern Philippines, the death toll from Typhoon Morakot rose to 22 Monday with 18 injured and four missing, including three European tourists who were swept away.
China will spend billions of dollars to arrest massive environmental problems along the Yangtze river and its Three Gorges reservoir.
